Just north of Yachats, Smelt Sands is an excellent whale watching and photography viewpoint. Visitors can walk a historic trail, explore the tidepools, and view stunning sunsets. An old county right-of-way, developed into the Yachats 804 Trail, extends approximately 2 miles from north of Smelt Sands State Park to Yachats State Park on the north side of the Yachats River.
