Anderson is located in Anderson County and it is the county seat. The city is situated between Pendleton and Abbeville, along U.S. Highway 76 near Hartwell Lake.
Anderson was named for General Robert Anderson, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was founded in December 1826 and incorporated by an act of the Legislature on December 19, 1833. Anderson was the first city in the South to have an unlimited supply of electric power. The first cotton gin in the world to be operated by electricity was in Anderson County in 1897.
The city's population, as of 1999, was 26,372. The largest event that is held in downtown Anderson is the Soiree, attracting more than 30,000 festival visitors over a two-day period. The Soiree is held Friday and Saturday on the last full weekend in April. The festival offers a variety of food, entertainment and art sales.
