Parris Island South Carolina
In 1566, a year after the founding of St. Augustine, the Spaniards built Fort San Felipe and the village of Santa Elena. When Indians wrecked the village in 1576, the Spanish rebuilt the town and added a larger fort, San Marcos. Driving tour maps are available at the Parris Island Visitors' Center. Tours are open to the public daily and are free.
