In Glacial Lakes & Prairies Region, De Smet is located in Kingsbury County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Sioux Falls between Huron and Brookings on US 14 and Hwy 25 near Lake Henry and Lake Preston. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,180, an increase of eight since 1990.

Known as "The Little Town on the Prairie" De Smet is proud to be the locale for five Laura Ingalls Wilder books, and the beginning of a sixth.
