Founded in 1876, Hill City is located in Pennington County just west of Rapid City between Lead and Custer along US 16/385 near Sheridan Lake, in Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Region. Hill City is part of the Rapid City, South Dakota metro area.

Hill City was the second town in the Black Hills. It soon became a ghost town as miners, disappointed by not finding enough gold, fled to newer claims in the Hills.

The tin boom in the 1880s brought the town back to life.
