Silver City is located in the Pennington County, off US 385 in Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Region, near the Rapid City, South Dakota metro area.

When General George A. Custer was in the Black Hills in 1874, he referred to the area as Elkhorn Prairie. For many years an active mining town, Silver City is known for its legends of lost mines. Today, the town is a resort area at the head of Pactola Lake, but enough relics from its mining days remain to give it ghost town status as well.
