In the early 1800's, Lewis and Clark, two of America's greatest explorers, traveled through the heart of the Great Lakes Region of South Dakota where various historical sites today recall their exploits. Some of the best fishing and hunting in the world can be found in this region where the Missouri River provides numerous opportunities for water recreation.

Several cities along the river reflect regional history and culture in excellent museums and attractions, including The Atka Lakota Museum in Chamberlain and the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. The State Capital in Pierre is one of the most fully restored capital buildings in the country.
