Crowning the 330-foot rocky eminence at High Street's west end is this famous feudal fortress, the ancient stronghold of Scottish kings. Most of the buildings were erected in the 14th century by David II of Scotland. The entire group covers seven acres and includes the old palace and, on the south, the banqueting, or old Parliament Hall, used for coronation banquets down to the time of Charles II.
