Fethiye

Search Fethiye

Thanks to its beauty, Fethiye is one of Turkey's most popular tourist destinations. The town is set at the hillsides of Mount Mendos on a broad bay dotted with numerous islands. Fethiye boasts a notable and thriving marina. The area's climate is characterized by long, hot, dry summers and short, warm, rainy winters.

The frankincense tree (Liquidamber Orientalis) is cultivated around Fethiye. The tree is the source of myrrh, which is extensively used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

Fethiye's historic name is Telmessos. The city is noted for its elaborately carved rock tombs set in cliff faces by the Lycians. An example is the resting place of Amnytas, built in Doric style dating to the fourth century B.C. Other historical places in the city are the Sarcophagi, the Fethiye Tower and a fortress constructed by the Knights of Rhodes on the hill above the city.
