In Brazoria County, Alvin is located 12 miles southeast of Houston on Hwy 6 west of League City near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
The community's early economy was based on livestock, poultry, dairying, agriculture, jasmine, oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals. By 1960, its population was 5,643; in 1990 it was 19,220.
Annually, from July through November, the city braces for floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
Today, rice farming and oil contribute largely to the economy. Baseball superstar Nolan Ryan is from Alvin.
