The park, which covers more than 5200 acres in Blanco County east of Johnson City, is located along the banks of the scenic Pedernales River. The river is prone to flash flooding and visitors should be aware of weather conditions and changes in the river.

The park, formerly the Circle Bar Ranch, typifies the Edwards Plateau terrain. Activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, swimming, tubing, wading, and other outdoor recreation.
