The forest covers roughly 1,250,000 acres along the Wasatch, Uinita and Stansbury ranges of northeastern and north central Utah. Some of Utah's tallest mountains are located in the Uinita and Wasatch mountain ranges. The forest is accessible by 1,391 miles of road and 1,050 miles of trail. Visitors will find 110 campgrounds and picnic areas as well as trails for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country and downhill skiing. This is an important wildlife and fishery forest which is home to about 300 species; a winter feeding ground for elk is located at Hardware Ranch, where elk and deer can be observed by telescope. Notable ski areas within the forest include Alta and Snowbird. Year-round recreation can be found at Logan Canyon; Pineview Lake, about 9 miles up Ogden Canyon; and Snow Basin, on the slope of Mount Ogden.

For that reason, many residents of the Valley wanted to reestablish their Welsh roots. In 2005, after a 90 year break, this annual cultural event, now called the Malad Valley Welsh Festival, once again became a reality.
