Part of Jamestown, the Original Site, this is the only standing ruin of the 17th-century town and was the tower of Jamestown's first brick church. Begun in 1639, it was used until about 1750 and then fell into ruin. Memorial tablets mark the foundations of an earlier wooden church, built in 1617, where the first assembly met. The foundations of these two 17th-century churches can be seen inside Jamestown Memorial Church. A living history program lets visitors meet with early settlers. An area near the church tower implies that it was used as a burial ground, a wooden cross marks the burial of several hundred.
