Portsmouth is located in southeastern Virginia along the banks of the Elizabeth River between Norfolk and Suffolk along Interstate 264. Beginning as a marine yard in 1767, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard is the largest in the world; besides the CSS Virgina, the shipyard produced the USS Chesapeake, sister of the USS Constitution and one of the Navy's first warships. Trolley tours highlight the Olde Towne Historic District, which is distinguished by a fine collection of period homes with a rich diversity of architectural styles. One of 45 sites along the tour, the Hill House is an 1800s English basement dwelling containing its original furnishings. Ferry service between Norfolk and Portsmouth is available; an information station is near the Olde Port Harbour at the end of North Street. Portsmouth is part of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro area.
