Fairfax (pop. 3,765) is located in Franklin County, 17 miles south of St. Albans along Highway 104 on the banks of the North Branch Lamoille River.

Although it cannot be ascertained, this town was probably named after Thomas Fairfax (1693-1781), sixth Baron Fairfax, like nearly a dozen other places in the country. Baron Fairfax befriended teenager George Washington by hiring him as a surveyor. The town was chartered on August 18, 1763. A local point of interest is a town lattice covered bridge, built in 1865, which spans Mill Brook.

Fairfax is part of the Burlington, Vermont metro area.
