Pittsford is located in Rutland County, eight miles north of Rutland along Highway 7 on the banks of the Otter River near the Chittenden Reservoir.
Counted among the many communities named for William Pitt, Pittsford also is home to four covered bridges.
The first U.S. patent was granted in the town. It was given to Samuel Hopkins for devising a way to create potash and pearl ash out of wood ash for making soap.
