Vergennes is located in Addison County, 24 mile south of Burlington along Highway 22A, just off Highway 7 on the banks of the Otter River near Button Bay State Park.

Vergennes America's third oldest city and is also considered the nation's smallest city at one square mile.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,762, an increase of 184 since 1990.
