Bremerton is the largest city in Kitsap County. It lies along Highway 16 on a hilly plat interspersed with bays and inlets. Seattle is due east across the Puget Sound.

Named after German immigrant William Bremer, who plotted the town in 1891, Bremerton was incorporated in 1901.

Today Bremerton, population 40,000, is home to the Puget Sound Naval Base, northern arm of the Pacific Fleet. The city's largest industry, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, is on the base. Attractions include the Bremerton Boardwalk & Centennial Plaza and Bremerton Symphony. The city is the jumping-off point to the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas, providing access to the Cascade and Olympic mountains. Its ferries are a familiar sight on the Sound, connecting the city to resort islands.

Bremerton is part of the Bremerton, WA metro area.
