Dungeness Spit

Search Visit Washington

A well-known landmark of the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas, the Dungeness Spit is the world's longest natural sand spit, extending 5 miles into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It shelters a large bay, tide flats, and estuary in which many animals find food and shelter. The spit is created by the action of wind and water currents on eroding soil from the mountains.

Dungeness Spit has grown about 15 feet per year for the past 120 years.
