George was founded in 1957 by Charles Brown, the developer who bought the townsite from the Bureau of Reclamation and became the town's first mayor. George is located on Interstate 90 in central Washington. The famous Gorge Amphitheater overlooking the Columbia River Gorge is just six miles east. Moses Lake lies east along the freeway, Quincy is north on Hwy 281 and Ephrata is northeast on Hwy 283.

The town is known for its George Washington Celebration held each Fourth of July - featuring the "world's largest cherry pie."
