Shell Lake is located in Washburn County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Eau Claire, between Cumberland and Hayward along US Highway 63 near Spooner, Rice Lake, and Siren. Shell Lake is the state's largest landlocked seepage lake. It is about 36 feet and it is an excellent place to fish, sail, swim, or just relax by. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,299, an increase of 138 since 1990.
