Superior is located in Douglas County (of which it is the county seat) in the northwest corner of Wisconsin, between Rice Lake and Duluth, MN along US Highway 53 on the banks of the St Louis River and the shore of Lake Superior near Brule River State Forest, the Black River, and Mont du Lac Ski Area. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 482, an increase of 1 since 1990.

Superior is part of the Duluth-Superior, Minnesota-Wisconsin metro area.
