City and forest blend among the broad valleys of the Ohio and Kanawha rivers. Many of West Virginia's largest cities are here, such as Charleston and these cities are replete with all the metropolitan amenities of shops, restaurants, festivals, museums and the arts. But south lies the Coalfields, the angular and impoverished coal mining Appalachia, a maze of highland ridges and draws and 'hollers' which marks the forest of the Eastern U.S. Here are some of the state's most isolated areas.
