Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area contains within its boundaries a 91-mile long reservoir, the Flaming Gorge and the Red canyons, carved through the Uinta Mountains by the Green River.
Lake Flaming Gorge is surrounded by Red canyons to the south, and cliffs, promontories, and hills to the north. Lake Flaming Gorge is a popular area for swimming, boating, and water-skiing. Along the western and eastern sides of the lake, large boat ramps are conveniently located near campgrounds.
The western shore of Lake Flaming Gorge is accessible from Buckboard and Lucerne Valley, and has two marinas that provide boating supplies as well as campsites. The lake contains many varieties of fish, such as rainbow and cutthroat trout, small- mouth bass, kokanee salmon, to name a few. Fishing is allowed all year; a permit from either Utah or Wyoming is required. Ice-fishing is popular in the winter.
