"The Great Pathfinders" in wagon trains were the first to travel the Overland Trail through Medicine Bow-Flaming Gorge Country. Later, in their quest to develop the first transcontinental railroad, the railroad companies used the same route.

This southern region of Wyoming is spanned from east to west by Interstate 80. Attractions include Medicine Bow National Forest and Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Located in the southeast corner of the region is Cheyenne, Wyoming's capital.
