The area was first the home of the Woodland Cree and Chepewyan Indians. Explorers and fur traders came to the area in 1778 and built a post to serve the vast fur trade region of the Mackenzie River basin. Oil was discovered around Lake Athabasca, around 1884, and today around 350,000 barrels of crude oil are extracted from here each day.
