The legend says that the name Medicine Hat came about because of a battle between the Cree and Blackfoot Indians on the banks of a southern Alberta river. The Cree were fighting well until their medicine man lost his headdress in midstream. The Cree believed this to be a bad omen, so they put down their weapons and were killed by the Blackfoot.
