The town's name is derived from a Blackfoot name, 'okatoks,' which means 'rocks.' The continent's largest known glacial boulder, Big Rock, is 4 miles west of the town. It was carried there during an ice age. Okotoks is a popular recreational retreat, and offers fishing and hiking.
