Wetaskiwin is a Cree name which means `the hills where peace was made.` The Blackfoot and Cree Indians were divided by the Red Deer River, but the Blackfoot would often cross the river to hunt buffalo, causing tensions with the Cree. It is believed that the two peoples made a peace agreement here, which ended the conflicts.
The town is located south of Edmonton.
