Adak is in the Andreanof Islands, in the Aleutian Islands chain. Adak is considered the southern-most community in Alaska.
Adak was developed into a Naval Air Station during the 1940s, which played an important role during the Cold War as a submarine serveillance center. Today, the station is home to a minimal number of Navy personnel, plus civilian caretakers.
