Adak Naval Air Station, approximately 80,000 acres in size, is located on Adak Island. Beginning in the early 1940s, Adak became a key operations and supply location for U.S. military forces. The northern portion of Adak Island was designated for military use by the Navy in 1959.
Adak Naval Air Station was the largest of the Aleutian Army projects with three runways, hangars, a 500-bed hospital, housing for 19,000 men, ship docks, fuel storage, air station, a motor torpedo boat base, and more.
