Aleknagik lies at the southeast end of Lake Aleknagik, 16 miles northwest of
Dillingham. Aleknagik means "wrong way home" because Natives returning to their homes along the Nushagak River would sometimes become lost in the fog. Alleknagik was incorporated in 1973. Today, a 25-mile road connects Aleknagik to
Dillingham. Residents rely heavily on the fishing industry.
Wood-Tikchik State Park, the largest state park in the nation, begins at Lake Aleknagik.
