Anaktuvuk Pass

Anaktuvuk Pass is located the North Slope Borough in the central Brooks Range. The community is within Gates of the Arctic NP and Preserve. Anaktuvuk Pass is the last remaining settlement of the Nunamiut - inland Inupiat Eskimos. Anaktuvuk Pass was a historic caribou migration route, and means "the place of caribou droppings." The community was incorporated in 1957. Over 90 percent of the current population are Eskimos. Anaktuvuk's economy is largely based on subsistence hunting for caribou.
