Koyukuk lies on the Yukon River near the mouth of the Koyukuk River. The town is adjacent to the Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge and the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge.

Today, residents are primarily Koyukon Athabascans. Koyukuk Airport provides year-round transportation for residents and visitors of Koyukuk.
