Much of the rich Eskimo culture is preserved in the Arctic Alaska area of its Far North Region. The region is also home to some of the most unusual natural phenomena in the world. The Midnight Sun is especially prominent here. In Barrow the sun rises in May and sets in August. During winter, a subtle glow may be seen on the polar desert, and the Northern Lights often brilliantly illuminate the night skies.
