Founded in 1896, Oakwood College is a historically black, primarily liberal arts four-year co-educational Seventh-day Adventist institution. Located in
Huntsville, AL, a city of more than 160,000, nestled in the beautiful Tennessee Valley at the foothills of the Appalachians, the college has as its fundamental purpose quality Christian education.
Since its beginning as an industrial school, Oakwood College has grown from 1896 to a current four-year college.
In 1991, according to statistics from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), Oakwood ranked fourth in the nation among all colleges and universities supplying African-American applicants to medical schools and sixth in the nation in the number of African-Americans accepted into medical schools.
