Spring Hill was founded in the 1820s as a wooded summer retreat from the inner city which at the time was plagued by the ravages of yellow fever. Greek Revival houses dating from the 1850s can be seen. Also in this area is Spring Hill College, established in 1830 and said to be the first institution of higher learning in Alabama.
