Weeks Bay is a small estuarine embayment, off of Mobile Bay, approximately 3 square miles of open shallow water, averaging 4.5 ft. deep. Weeks Bay is fringed with marsh and swamp. Forested wetlands form an extensive strip between floodplain swamps and upland pine-oak forest, and is diverse and rich with species. Weeks Bay is a critical nursery for fish, crustaceans and shellfish. The Reserve encompasses 3,028 acres of land and water in and around Weeks Bay, Mobile Bay and the Fish River. The Reserve presently includes an Interpretive Center , a laboratory, a conference room, a small classroom, lobby/exhibit area; a 2,500 ft. handicapped accessible boardwalk with observation deck overlooking the Bay and a raised catwalk over a wetlands habitat; and a quality specimen collection of regional flora and fauna. Nature trails are equipped with written guide and plant labels for self-guided walks.
