Nestled in the foothills of the
Ozark Mountains, Van Buren is located in
Crawford County (of which it is the county seat). Also situated just northeast of
Fort Smith, between
Alma and Fort Smith along US Hwy 64 on the banks of the
Arkansas River, near the Oklahoma boarder.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 19,277, an increase of 4,378 since 1990.
Van Buren is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma metro area.
