The original inhabitants of Wupatki are believed to have been ancestors of the Hopi Indians. In this 35,253-acre area you will see hundreds of ruins. Among the most impressive is Wupatki of "Tall House," containing more than 100 rooms. Nearby are a ceremonial ampitheater, ball court and "blow Hole." Other important ruins are the Citadel, Nalakihu, Lomaki and the three-story Wukoki. Most of the ruins were inhabited from about 1100-1225. There are self-guided trails through the ruins that can be traveled during the daylight hours.
