The Tempe Historical Museum was founded by the Tempe Historical Society, which opened a 4,800-square foot exhibit hall in the east wing of the Tempe Public Library building in 1972. The Museum's main hall presents the exciting elements of Tempe's history, from the prehistoric settlements of the Hohokam and the founding of the landmark Hayden Flour Mill to the present. There is also a variety of classes, lectures, workshops, and special events offered throughout the year. Local schools participate in specially developed, curriculum-related activities at the Tempe Historical Museum. Permanent and changing exhibits, educational programs, and research projects generally focus on some aspect of Tempe's history within the context of state and national events.
