With a population of 14,250 Colwood is home to Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Park, which between 1878 and 1956 was the site of coastal defenses. Other attractions include golfing, fishing, seeing the grounds of historic homes, strolling the long sandy beach of Esquimalt Lagoon, visiting the seabird sanctuary, or just enjoying the view of
Victoria across the water. The Juan de Fuca Information Center furnishes heritage guides and maps of the community.
Colwood was established by the Hudson's Bay Company, originally as a farm to supply food to Fort Victoria.
