Located off
Highway 1 (The Transcanada Highway) on the southeast coast of
Vancouver Island, Crofton, with a population of 2,500 has been a pulp and paper mill town since 1957, before which it was the site of a copper smelter for ore transported from Mr. Croft's mine on Mt. Sicker. Mill tours are offered during the summer. Other attractions include shopping and strolling along the waterfront, fishing, golfing, quiet parks, hiking on Maple Mountain and visiting the museum in the summer. As an alternate route, Crofton can also be reached by taking the BC ferry from Vesuvius on
Salt Spring Island.
