Mayne Island British Columbia |
Laced with quiet, paved country roads and few (if any) hills, Mayne Island is popular with cyclists. The island has about 19 miles of main road. Though the ferry docks at Village Bay, Miners Bay is the center of activity. It gained its name because it was once a stopover for the many fortune seekers on their way to the gold fields from Victoria. Welcoming visitors, Miners Bay is full of life during the summer pleasure boat season. Active Pass is a major transportation route through rough waters ,and can be viewed from the government wharf. Tourist facilities are available. A blend of old and new abound in Mayne, from century-old mansions and original farms (such as Hardscrabble), to modern suburbia. Best beach on Mayne: Bennett Bay Beach. Mayne Island is one of the Gulf Islands.
