Saturna Island British Columbia |
Sparsely populated, it's the most southerly of the Gulf Islands. Accommodations are limited and there are no public campgrounds. The BC Ferries terminal at Lyall Harbour is serviced by ferries from Swartz Bay, and Galiano and Mayne Islands. However, connections are infrequent, so check schedules carefully. There is no direct connection with the mainland. Saturna Island is known for its Lamb Barbecue on the the July 1 holiday weekend. An old-fashioned country fair, crafts sale, games and beer garden keep visitors entertained until the lamb (barbecued whole over an open pit) is served. Other Saturna attractions include Winter Cove Marine Provincial Park, the historic East Point Lighthouse (1888) and Mount Wharburton Pike, the Gulfs' second highest peak.
