The Antwerp Museum of Folklore was one of the first such museums in Belgium, when it was founded in 1907; there are now dozens. The museums collections emphasize the lives of ordinary Antwerp residents, with themes drawn from the various stages in life: birth, childhood, education, marriage, military service, and so on. Some of the exhibits include dolls, a recreated 19th century pharmacy, and an organ used in a turn-of-the-century dance hall. The Antwerp Poesje, a 19th century puppet show with authentic double-rod puppets, is re-enacted regularly.
