Balen, population 19,000, is the easternmost commune in
Antwerpen province, placing it approximately 20 kilometers north of
Hasselt. It features a small zoo, a few historic mills open to tourists, and a motocross park. Balen's Kruiermuseum documents the lives of the local population in between the two World Wars.
