Gravensteen Castle

Search Gent

Gravensteen Castle, originally constructed in 1180 by the Count of Flanders Philip of Alsace, was restored at the onset of the 20th century. It had been used for many other purposes prior to the reworking, including stretches where it functioned as a mint, a prison, and a cotton plant. From the top of its tower there is a superior view of the surrounding city of Gent. An exhibit of torture implements seems to make an indelible impression on many visitors.
