Hessenhuis

Search Antwerp

The Hessenhuis was originally a warehouse, built during the mid-16th century boom times in Antwerp. The 1585 closing of the Scheldt River and subsequent economic downturn put an abrupt end to its usefulness a scant 20 years after it was completed, and it has had a checkered history since. For a long time it served as a military barracks. During the 19th century, it saw use as a warehouse again. In the mid-20th century, Antwerps avant-garde artist community adopted it, and used it for spectacular art installations, theatrical and musical performaces, and film screenings. Its current use began when a series of renovations were completed in 1979 -- the Hessenhuis now hosts a constant stream of temporary exhibitions.
