House of Erasmus

Maison d'Erasme

Search Brussels

The humanist Erasmus lived for five months during the year 1521 in a house in Anderlecht, owned by his friend Pierre Wichman. In 1930 the house became city property, and it has been turned into a museum celebrating Erasmus and the philosophical and social movements associated with him. Inside are nearly 1,200 manuscripts, the most important of which is his famous work L'loge de la folie (The Praise of Folly). Adjacent to the building lies the "jardin des maladie" (garden of the diseases), a medicinal garden like the one that existed during the time of Erasmus' stay.
